Bárbara Monteiro (Oliveira do Hospital, Portugal, 1991) is a Lisbon-based photographer, videographer and audio storyteller whose practice bridges commissioned visual journalism and author-driven documentary work.
She holds a BA in Journalism, where she specialised in photojournalism, and has refined her craft through the Portuguese Institute of Photography’s studio-lighting workshop (2013) and a portrait masterclass with Micmojo (2015). In 2023-24 she completed a 5 moth long NARRATIVA Masterclass led by documentary photographer Mário Cruz.
Since 2014 Monteiro’s images have appeared in cultural and independent media including Gerador, El Salto and the local newspaper Lisboa Para Pessoas, alongside commercial assignments for BMW, Outsystems, Galp, Fidelidade, Lisnave and several architecture and communications studios.
In 2024 she joined NARRATIVA, a non-profit photography association in Lisbon. There she also scripts and hosts the bilingual NARRATIVA Podcast, producing in-depth conversations with photographers exhibited in the space.
Monteiro’s long-term project THIS IS HEAVEN (begun 2023) examines the backstage labour of funeral professionals and the social rituals that surround death. The series was selected by #GreifGuestRoom (Der Greif, November 2024), shortlisted for the ArtACCA Prize 2024 and the Sony World Photography Awards 2025 (Professional—Perspectives) and presented in the official Sony Awards exhibition at Somerset House, London, 2025.
