Bárbara Monteiro (b. 1991, Oliveira do Hospital, Portugal) is a Lisbon-based photographer and filmmaker working across documentary, portrait and architectural photography. Her practice moves between commissioned visual journalism and long-term author-driven projects.

She holds a BA in Journalism, specialising in photojournalism, and has expanded her practice through studio-lighting studies at the Portuguese Institute of Photography and a portrait masterclass with Micmojo. In 2023–24 she completed the NARRATIVA Masterclass led by documentary photographer Mário Cruz.

Since 2014, her work has been published in cultural and independent media, alongside commercial commissions in architecture and visual communication. She is a member of NARRATIVA, a Lisbon-based non-profit photography association, where she also writes and hosts the bilingual NARRATIVA Podcast.

She co-directed JÚLIO, a participatory photography project developed with psychiatric patients at Hospital Júlio de Matos, exploring authorship and mental health.

Her long-term project THIS IS HEAVEN (2023–) examines the backstage labour of funeral professionals and the social rituals surrounding death. The series was selected for #GreifGuestRoom (Der Greif, 2024), shortlisted for the ArtACCA Prize 2024 and the Sony World Photography Awards 2025 (Professional – Perspectives), and exhibited at Somerset House, London.
